The process of wisdom tooth removal itself is quite tolerable because of the anesthesia effect. But what most patients dread is the pain that may come afterward. Patients who are scheduled for wisdom tooth surgery at our Pearland office often ask us: Will the recovery after treatment be painful? You can expect some discomfort, but it can be managed. We’ll share some tips and guidelines to help you recover well.
What Is the Recovery Timeline After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Once you’ve undergone a wisdom tooth extraction, initial healing will take about a week or two. We’ll break it down:
Days 1–3
Soon after the treatment, you’ll likely not feel anything in your mouth for some time until the anesthetic wears off. After this, mild pain or discomfort begins.
Pain and swelling peak in the first 24 to 48 hours. Then it starts to subside. Your jaw may also feel sore when you try to open your mouth wide.
It’s better to take a day off from work or school to rest.
Days 4–7
Swelling goes down by this time. The back of your jaw may still hurt a little, but it’s much more manageable than the first couple of days.
Jaw stiffness also reduces, and most patients are able to open and close their mouths normally.
Days 8–14
Gum tissues heal fully, but jawbone recovery still takes some time. By this stage, most people can get back to their routine diet and activities.
How You Can Manage Pain and Swelling After Wisdom Tooth Removal
It’s normal to have some pain after getting your wisdom tooth pulled out. These tips will help you out:
Keep the gauze in place
The gauze pad we place after extraction is to control bleeding. Keep it in place as long as suggested or until bleeding stops.
Take OTC pain medication
We typically prescribe a safe dosage of pain medication after treatment. Take them as our dentist advises.
If the medicine is not helping with your pain, don’t exceed the dosage on your own. Talk to our dentist first.
Use cold compresses
This is the most helpful way to reduce swelling. Place a cold pack on the outside of your cheek for just 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat this a few times a day.
You can make one by yourself by simply wrapping a few ice cubes in a clean cloth or towel.
Watch what you eat and drink
Start with soft and cool foods during the first 2 to 3 days. Avoid anything spicy, hot, crunchy, or too hard to chew until the treatment site stays tender.
Also, don’t drink anything using a straw for the first 24 hours.
Sleep with your head elevated
Many people feel the pain worsen when they lie down. Keep an extra pillow under your head before sleeping to lessen discomfort.
